From The Vaults: AURORA AUSTRALIS (originally posted September 2011)

Many of you have heard of the Aurora Borealis, otherwise known as the Northern Lights, but did you know about Aurora Australis, or Southern Lights? Same idea, different hemisphere. What is the idea, should you not know? Earth has many layers in its atmosphere (from lowest to highest altitude wise): troposphere, stratosphere, mesosphere, thermosphere, and exosphere. Energized particles from space (originating from such events as solar winds) get pulled by Earth's magnetic field into the atmosphere. In the lower thermosphere portion of the atmosphere, these particles collide with atoms and create reactions resulting in a sort of fantastic light show which can be seen only at extreme north or south latitudes.
