7 BILLION SOULS

God, being quite omniscient and omnipotent, is still busy at the moment. Please take a number and wait in line...
How do your insides look??

Tonight is Halloween night.  On this night, according to some trains of thought,  the world population will reach 7 billion. There is a strange energy in the air everywhere. Many cultures associate this general time of year with spirits of the dead temporarily revisiting the Earth en masse. This is also a time, according to ancient Mayan astrology, where the Ninth Wave has just ended (on Oct 28th), which means a full fruition of a new consciousness or growth all over the world and grand cosmic change all around, leading towards 2012.  How much of it can you believe?

Damnpires (Dhampirs)

Sure, you've heard a ton about vampires, but have you heard of a dhampir? In certain Balkan folkloric beliefs, a dhampir is a child with a vampire father and human mother. They are immune to the normal weaknesses that most vampires have (sunlight, garlic, yadda yadda) likely because of the human element in their blood, yet they have vampiric powers (the best of both worlds). They can also easily detect the presence of a vampire. Because of all this, dhampirs make excellent vampire hunters. Many would be conflicted in feeling and belief because of their mixed heritage. Perhaps a dhampir who chooses to be a vampire hunter would do so because they are psychologically 'lashing out' against their unwanted vampire blood and the fact they would feel very different and alienated from most humans.  Physical characteristics of a dhampir vary, from looking like a normal person to having any combination of the following characteristics:  wild unkempt appearance, pronounced nose or teeth or ears, dark wild hair, no fingernails (or even bones!), or a deep marking on the backside (almost like a birthmark or back tattoo).  Have you spotted any suspicious folk lately?

Buddy Guy = Da Man

Some years back I attended a Buddy Guy concert and my life was changed forever.  Not too many concerts can do that for me. Here's the review I wrote  at the time:

Review- HOLY PHUCKING SHIT!

I always knew Buddy Guy was da man, and I've heard some of his stuff on record- but seeing him live took it all to another level.
I feel almost guilty and amazed at the fact that I wasn't into him as much before. What rock had I been living under? The following is my testimony to witnessing the great BUDDY GUY live:

I remember seeing the opening act, Steve Strongman. Good singer, good guitar player, good harmonica player. He has a good backing bass player and drummer. Mostly a typical blues guy..but he branches out with some songs. Still, there's something missing. It's as if he's too clean, too synthetic, too perfect. Too Nutrasweet. I'm not in the mood to clap or anything. I know this guy is really good...but maybe he hasn't grown on me. Or maybe I don't like the fact he says his new CD is on sale between every fucking song. We hit the intermission, it's a moderate relief.

And then....there was Buddy Guy.
So first his band comes on, the crowd cheers... .. then he walks on- the crowd goes INSANE. I feel this new aura or vibe, like there's hope for the world after all (I know... it's corny). I'm also compelled to clap..as if I'm controlled by puppet strings.

The band members are all wearing black clothes like tracksuits and sports jerseys and the like-  I mean, they all almost look like gangsta rappers! (haha).  They get right down to business. What a backing band ! Buddy sure picked the cream of the crop. The keyboardist looks like he's playing hand drums on the keys when he plays. The drummer is impeccable yet thundering..he looks like he has gorilla arms while pounding away. The bassist looks to be physically opposite-small but mighty..and holding the low end up nicely.
He moves along with the groove swaying right to left. Right beside him,
looking the most 'gangsta' of all, the backing guitarist sways in a similar fashion. This man's got some mean licks of his own and some of the showmanship as he at one point twirls his guitar in front full 360, like a minute hand moving a whole hour in fast forward.

Probably 80's era Buddy Guy..with his signature polka dot Fender Stratocaster

But back to Buddy.
There's something distinctly Buddy about Buddy...only HE has it. I'd say he's a master of dynamics, and feeling in touch with the Heart of the Blues. At first he seems quiet on the mic..and I wonder if it's because he's gettin' a bit frail (after all he's 71).
Suddenly the idea is shattered as he belts out notes of holy colors that just parade into the air- WOW what a voice.
And it's the same thing with his guitar playing-one second he's subdued...noodling on a single note soft as a feather...the next second he's unleashed a storm. Further than that...in the space of a quarter second he switches between modes..like changing a channel...or even channel surfing.. not because there's nothing good on, but because EVERYTHING on is good.

I gotta say, Buddy's one of the very few guitar players I've ever seen who can play a guitar solo without even PLAYING.
I catch sight as he flips his guitar around and hugs it to his body like a long lost love. Nothing can be heard but the gentle rustle of the muted strings against his body. Beyond that, in a single note he wrings and squeezes out so much juice that the thirst of the crowd is satisfied ten times over. There is no impatience in these subdued or single note moments...only undivided attention. Like watching slow motion footage in an action movie, where there's even more time to pay attention to what's going on.

The man is smooth as melted butter. At one point he's literally taking a drink with one hand, and playing with the other.
Or he's using a drumstick to play in a frenzy and you think he's trying to start a fire with the friction.

Another time he steps down off the stage into the crowd. This is easy for him since his guitar is wireless. There's no wild clawing or hooting or grabbing. Everyone is utterly still and silent...like they're looking for total disrespect or trouble if they touch or interrupt this man, this demigod. Or as if they are waiting for a bomb to be disarmed...the seconds are tense...yet beautiful. Mr. Buddy Guy moves down the front row toward the one side aisle, a spotlight following him as if he's an escaped prisoner.

A man puts his arm tightly around his wife as Buddy passes in front..as if the wife is in danger of being swept away by this Pied Piper. Just a few more people down...and Buddy reaches out and offers one hand to another dame who appears to have no one to clamp her down. She reaches out, like they are going to shake hands. Keep in mind he is still playing with the other hand this whole time. Then he grabs her wrist and makes her strum his guitar while he continues fancy fretwork with the other hand. He moves on. He reaches the side aisle. He moves down the side aisle. Still playing. Then he leaves through one of the side exits.

Still playing. For all I know he's gone for a bathroom break and decided to take his guitar with him and play the whole blessed time. The lights come on. Everyone within the thousand- plus crowd keeps looking around in utter confusion. Where's Buddy Guy? When one person sees another looking somewhere else...they follow the gaze thinking for a second that this other person is looking at Buddy. Then they turn and look and see no Buddy (ha ha get it...'nobody') but then another person sees THEM looking and follows their gaze...and so on. Utter chaos. And the gorgeous notes still resound over the PA. Buddy is with us in spirit, ladies and gentlemen.

After a long while Buddy re-emerges. He appears to be heading back to the stage, but he makes a sharp cut into the thickest part of the crowd. What's he doing with the one girl? This time I can't see...his back is turned to me blocking most the view and the distance is kind of far. He eventually makes his way to the stage again, and resumes things like he never left the stage to begin with.

Buddy puts the class into trash. He's the smoothest stumbler I've seen. Some of the songs he stops mid-song and he's like "shit"
and they just move to the next song. Strangely enough it doesn't seem like he's sloppy or lame when this sort of thing happens.
He says something like 'they coulda rehearsed a bit more but too much rehearsing takes the fun or spirit out of it.'

It's just weird because I've seen so many bands on stage fuck up and it seemed an embarrassment or lame-ass, or like I'd be tempted to say I want my money back, but somehow Buddy's so smooth you wonder if it's part of the act even.  Like coming out of a bad fall with a smooth action roll, if you will.

What a sense of humour too. There's one instance where he tries to get the crowd to finish his line for him...and they just sorta mumble it. He stops the song...and he's like "what the fuck was that?" or something to that effect. It's not a sinister thing...he's still very lovable and funny. Buddy then talks about how he's been doing shows in Japan and New Zealand with better crowd response, and he considers N. America home....so it's lame if his own folks don't get it. So Buddy resumes the song and tells the lighting guys to shine lights into the crowd to remind them of their cue (dum-dums) and the second time around the crowd does much better, and he's like "yeah! that's the ticket!!" or something to that effect. I seem to recall him ranting on a few funny things like "smoking ain't as bad as the fuckin' chicken you eat" as he illegally lights up on stage, and so forth.

Buddy: "Smokin' ain't as bad as the fuckin' chicken you eat.."
One of the craziest parts comes near the end. And it's not so much Buddy. If I thought Buddy Guy was impressive doing all this shit at 71...Mel Brown comes on and he's 74 I think. He seems much more frail and needs an assistant to help bring his guitar for him and he has a portable oxygen unit on wheels. But when he plays....he zings. The two friendly 'duel' back and forth and weave their notes together. Absolutely stunning. These 'geezers' could wipe the floor with any watered down wannabe young artist of today, easily.
Then, Buddy leaves...with only Mel Brown and the band left. Soon, even they leave. And there is NO encore, which I totally respect because the encore has become one of the most cliché piece of shit aspects of today's rock concert.

Mel Brown- another legend joins in. Worked with almost every big name in Blues. R.I.P. (Died March 20, 2009)

So what more to say of Buddy?
He's been called the bridge from classic blues to modern rock. He has influenced Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, and Stevie Ray Vaughan..among countless others. Jimi Hendrix once said "Heaven is lying at Buddy Guy's feet while listening to him play guitar."
I could totally and more concretely grasp that idea by seeing Buddy live.

Buddy Guy, still kickin' it..

St. Christopher, the Werewolf

To start with, when I first knew of St. Christopher, I knew of him as being popular in medallions such as this:

He is sort of the patron saint of guiding children and travelers and seafarers to safety. In one legend, he was a fearsome giant and aspired to go serve the greatest king of kings. He did as such with some king who claimed to be all that, but then he noticed the king cross himself and display some fear toward the Devil. Christopher was like, well maybe the Devil is more badass, so I'll go serve him. He then came upon some brigands with a leader who claimed to be the the Devil Himself. After some time, this leader professed fear of Christ. So then Christopher was like, man, Christ must be the most badass of them all!

The Devil- the most badass of them all ???

He searched and searched but never found Christ in the flesh. An old Christian man instructed him in ways of Christianity and following Christ, mentioning the fact of frequent and devout fasting and prayer. St. Christopher was like 'fcuk that, I like my feasting over fasting....and prayer puts me to sleep!' So the old man suggested Chris use his size and strength carry people across a river where many were being swept away. This would be pleasing towards the Lord, since it was helping humanity in a way. So ol' Christopher did that.

One day he carried a child across and was like 'holy shit, this kid feels like he's like 20,000 pounds or something.' Then, upon delivering the child to the other embankment of the river, he had a revelation or moment of enlightenment- and recognized the kid as Jesus Christ Himself. What was felt was a sense of the 'weight of the world', because Christ evermore carries that burden on his shoulders, dig? Christopher journeyed here and afar to preach all his good news and shit. He was pissed off because all these Christians were being executed at Lycia. He protested and the local king tried to make Chris renounce his faith...even by sending beautiful women to seduce him. In the end it was the other way around. St. Christopher seduced them...with his religion.. and converted many to his cause. Eventually the king was like 'enough of this shit' and beheaded St. Christopher.
Curious art..preaching to the dog-men

Ok, what about the werewolf part? Well, here's another legend. Some ancient scribes wrote of a race of canine-headed men living in various Eastern lands, including areas now parts of Russia, India, Libya, and elsewhere. They were called the Cynocephali. Though reasonably intelligent, they were could also be ruthless and bloodthirsty, even cannibalistic. St. Christopher was one of these. Like in the legend aforementioned, St. Chris was huge in size as well. He went by another name too, Reprobus..which essentially meant 'reprobate' or 'scoundrel'. Sounds cool. He basically lived a quite martial life until he was touched by the influence of Christ in some way, perhaps by hearing about him. He could only speak in his guttural barking language of his people, but an angel graced him with the ability to speak in any tongue. He then went around crusading for Christ, and renouncing his old barbaric ways.  Prolly by this point he went from being called Reprobus to Christopher, which literally means 'Christ-bearer'. As in one to bear the good news, or bear Christ himself, for example. This can make sense in the context of both or more legends being able to overlap without any glaring contradiction. The rest, they say, is puzzled history.

Wong Lo Kat

A real good herbal tea drink...popular in China and found elsewhere in the world. According to the Asian Times several years back, this drink outsold Coca Cola within China during a year's worth of sales! WLK has sold billions and billions in the country's currency. It was invented in the Qing dynasty in 1828 by Dr. Wong Chat Bong as a sort of medicinal drink. In many places you can buy iced tea drinks, but how healthy are they really? Many are quite unhealthy when you look closer. This is a give or take exception. Check out the ingredient list: Water, Sugar, Mesona chinensis Benth, Plumeria rubra L. cv. Acutifolia, Microcos paniculata L, Chrysanthemum, Lonicera japonica Thunb, Prunella vulgaris L, Liquorice.

The worst thing there is sugar. In doses it never hurt anyone, though. All that other strange sounding stuff (mostly Latin scientific names for plants) can be deciphered as follows:

~Mesona chinensis Benth- A type of Asian mint that is used commonly in something called 'grass jelly' which is like a herbal sort of jello-like dessert. Among other things it is beneficial for immunity and is anti-cancerous.
~Plumeria rubra L. cv. Acutifolia- Another Asian plant, like a small flowery tropical tree. Used to treat Gonorrhea, swelling, and ulcers.
~ Microcos paniculata L- Leafy plant with solid berries that look much like gooseberries. Can be used as painkiller, anti-inflammatory agent, antipyretic (fever-reducing) , anti jaundice.
~Chrysanthemum- A showy flower that comes in many varieties. Popular as a tea base. Medicinal in many ways, including antibacterial and antifungal...and even to help treat HIV! I've recently used a bio friendly insect killer with a chrysanthemum base.
~Lonicera japonica Thunb- Also known as Japanese Honeysuckle (and 100 other names),it is a flowery climbing vine with a vanilla type scent. In  TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) it is known as a cooling agent that combats fever, sore throat and cough, flu, body toxins, ulcers. Also, it is antibacterial and anti inflammatory.
~Prunella vulgaris L- Called Self Heal, Heal-all, Heart of the Earth, and other names. A small plant with purple flowers, found worldwide. In an article written by Deb Jackson and Karen Bergeron, it was described as such: Once proclaimed to be a Holy herb and thought to be sent by God to cure all ailments of man or beast, and said to drive away the devil, which lead to the belief that Heal-All was grown in the Witches garden as a disguise. The root was used to make a tea to drink in ceremonies before going hunting by one Native American tribe to sharpen the powers of observation.

It is antibacterial, antiseptic, alleviates gas and aids digestion overall, expels worms, fights fever, treats wounds and bleeding, reduces swelling and body tensions, and more!

~Liquorice- This should be easily recognized.  Besides being used in food and candies, it has been used as medicine since ancient times the world over. Good for digestion, ulcers, respiratory ailments, various diseases.. and a zillion other things.

One final thing, the can itself could stop a bullet. None of this pansy flimsyass easily crumpled stuff so commonly found in America.

So if you think of grabbing a coke and happen to see WLK tea instead, give it a shot. Not only does it taste good, but it's super medicinal.

Infrared Photography

Recently a friend gave me an old digital camera, and the one already owned seemed to be more than enough of what I currently needed to take pictures. What would I do with this spare? Online you can find tutorials for all sorts of things to turn your digital camera into: webcam, scanner, pinhole camera, taser, and so forth. One of the more interesting things I found was a how-to on making your digital camera into an infrared camera. There's a pretty cool tutorial here and I think I'll try it: http://www.geektechnique.org/projectlab/254/how-to-turn-a-digital-camera-into-an-ir-camera.html

Now, for those of you who don't know much about infrared (IR), here's a little bit and some.  Most of us see things in a limited spectrum of colors and light. Light has wavelengths like sound and when it bounces off of something, our eyes will pick it up and interpret it as a certain color..based on wavelength. The same way short sound waves are higher pitched and broader ones are lower pitched, color changes with light wavelength. Here's the visible spectrum of light/colors, simplified:
Taking a look, you may notice the utmost left is red and the utmost right is violet. Beyond what we can see past violet lies ultraviolet (UV). Waves in this territory are a radiation that could even harm us and damage our skin. When you hear about UV rays, it's usually in the case of the sun emitting them and how you can get burned by them, especially on a bright and hot day. On the other side of the spectrum, beyond red...is infrared. Like UV, waves in this territory are a form of invisible radiation. Remember even visible light is radiation, though it's not usually harmful in most cases. There are many kinds of radiation, some that can melt your skin off or poison you or even kill you, other kinds that are harmless.

Even though we cannot see infrared or UV with the naked eye, we can use special equipment to 'translate' the invisible into visible colors. This is what infrared cameras do. You can buy special lenses to put on normal cameras, or you can have the whole camera made stricly for the purpose of seeing IR alone. There are also different ways the IR can be translated. Some high tech IR cams translate the source into something called thermography. Since heat and IR share a lot of the same territory, people can see temperature differences in thermographic pictures. Here are some examples:

Red is the most hot, yellow is next in line, greens follow, and blues are the coldest.

At nighttime or in darkness we find things hard to see. Naturally this makes sense since there's very little or no light to bounce colors back to us. Since IR is beyond normal sight anyhow, info can be picked up and converted into a usually greenish display in nightvision cameras/goggles/hunting scopes etc. Below is an example of nightvision.
Garys Detecting.co.uk
At an IR wavelength closer to visible light than thermography and nightvision, the realm of most basic IR cameras or filters exists. If I were to convert my digicam with the tutorial mentioned above, unfortunately I would probably not be able to use the cam for thermography and full-on nightvision. Once again, the way the IR is translated is different depending on equipment used. I would be able to get some pretty trippy stuff though. Below are examples of this basic and most common IR photography, quite striking and sci-fi:
